Ummm... how do I wear that??

04.24.10

Harem pants a.k.a slouchy cropped pants have been out since last Fall, but I think this Spring's weather has offered up the perfect opportunity for more frequent wear. It also seems to be that they have become more mainstream as I've seen them pop up more in magazines, boutiques, and on the street.
From the outside looking in, this may seem like a tough trend to pull off. But this statement couldn't be any more further from the truth. I am going to put it out there and say ANYONE can wear a pair of these. The best part about this trend is that these pants highlight the thinnest part of the leg, ranging from the lower leg/calf down to the ankle. You don't have to be tall or skinny or a combo of the two to have a skinny ankle, no one has ankles thicker than their thighs! You do, however, have to be careful of choosing the right fabric and silhouette. Styles with less of a "billow" to them are best on curvy women, while pleated fabrics create instant curves on a slender frame.
Heels and a blazer provide for a more polished look with cropped pants. Flats are the casual option, though that is where the idea of being the "tall/skinny chick in the magazines" comes into play.

Check out a few of my favorite examples below.

Shorts are all the rage these days. In these cold conditions though, who wants to be caught dead in shorts?? There is a solution, you might think I'm crazy, but I like to call it daring-all-while-being-comfortable-with-my-insane-ways ;) Take these Rebecca Minkoff Helmut shorts for example...

To bring these shorts from mid-summer to winter, just add one thing... tights!! Yes, tights are so perfect that you can even wear them with shorts not just dresses and tunics! As for shoes, anything goes - flats, boots, heels... anything! That's what makes shorts and tights so fun, you don't have to put too much effort into the outfit. For the top half of your body, you want to be covered so that this casual look doesn't go down Trashy Lane too quickly. A t-shirt and a blazer or an oversized boyfriend sweater can add a boho feel. This look, like many others I've reviewed, is for the daring! There is nothing tame about shorts in winter. And if you're feeling extra saucy, try colored or patterned tights.

Check out how the girls below pulled off the look!

Ever bought a fantastic, absolutely incredible pair of shoes/pants/earrings/animal print tights AND have not the slightest clue as to how you are going to pull them off, let alone with what? FashionRoulette has answers!! Introducing a new segment to the Fashion Roulette blog "Ummm... how do I wear that??" This hot spot is going to be your little ray of sunshine when you throw your hands up into the air and give up trying to figure out how to look both fashionable and presentable ;) Aside from my weekly blurbs I gladly welcome emails of pics of anything you might need help with. So enough of the intro! Here is our first item!!

These bad boys are the Guess "Nailbe" cut-out pumps. Now, the cut-out trend is super hot right now! Seeing this in shoes though, can be scary! These shoes will take over any outfit you put on. A mini-dress in the sub-dued metallic to black color family and bright nail polish would work lovely! Just make sure your metallics aren't too shiny or you may risk looking like a disco ball. Your make-up can be played up here too, maybe a bright lip color or false lashes. These shoes would be great for a night out with girls, dinner and dancing especially! The Guess ""Nailbe" is not for the shy girl who sits in the corner, it definitely screams LOOK AT ME! So next time you're shoe shopping and find a pair of sky high heels that can basically be worn alone, think sub-dued on top and party on the bottom! Proportion is key when working such stand out styles.  If I told you to skimp on a daring pair such as these, this blog wouldn't be called Fashion Roulette now would it?
